Bathroom Remodel

10 January 2012

Thinking of remodeling your bathroom? Hold on just a moment and read this before you jump right in. Maybe you already have a plan, maybe you plan on “winging it”. The latter can certainly be a lot of fun and can leave room for you to be creative, but there are a few simple things that might help you figure out the direction you want to go – while still leaving the details to your creative imagination!

Think about space. How many cupboards do you currently have? Many people find that over the years they accumulate so much bathroom “stuff” – tiny shampoos from hotels (shame on us!), half-empty bottles of conditioner that just wasn’t right for you (kept for emergencies), deodorant given to you as a gift, etc., etc., etc. Stuff. Eventually, there just isn’t enough room for it all, so we toss it under the sink, adding to the jumbled cesspool of disorganization. But what if had the room for just one more cabinet? If you buy at the right time and place, you can find nice-looking bathroom cabinets relatively cheap.

Part of the bathroom remodel that can sometimes be missed is the color detail. If you’re putting down new tile, painting the walls, or putting up new wallpaper, of course you’re going to make sure that it all matches. But sometimes people overlook the linen aspect of matching: can you find these colors readily in stores? Make sure it’s a typical color so various stores carry the colors of towels, etc. that you need to have a functional color scheme.

Another thing to think about is how to attack that shower. It’s become so old and moldy that it’s actually started talking to you! Well, maybe not that bad, but you know that shower and how bad it’s gotten. What’s the new one going to look like and what can we do now to prevent it from becoming so bad again? One suggestion that might not seem like a big deal – but is – is choosing the right enclosure for the walls of the shower. Meaning: stay away from shower doors if you can. If you have the time – or the help – to spend cleaning and spraying them incessantly to prevent buildup, go with it; they can be beautiful. But speaking from experience, those doors “getcha” every time. A shower curtain supported by a rod is a much easier way of mainstreaming that bathroom.

Just a couple tips for those who might need them! And there’s no shame in getting a professional to give you a hand!
